Once upon a time, there were great mountains, ocean, beautiful flowers and trees in the planet. However, because of the ignorant human being, the nature gradually turned into a concrete jungle……

In fact, most of the garbage is diamond in the rough. If we focus more on reusing the old materials and extending the life of the old stuff, we can definitely contribute more to reducing the wastage.

In Design Spectrum’s ‘Story of a Garbage Planet’ workshop, we used a lot of daily utensils or disposable packaging to create new things. The workshop can stimulate the participating kids’ observation and imagination. It also guides the kids to a3R and environmentally friendly practice.

    【New book Launch】《日日好玩——玩好設計》Sharing Session

Many people still harbour the preconception that “play” is a waste of time, and hence give up playing or have the dismissal of play. Without play for design, there is no design for play. Play opens mind, design shapes future.

Design Spectrum of Hong Kong Design Centre, a project supported by Create Hong Kong of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region as the Lead Sponsor, has collaborated with Joint Publishing to publish a Chinese book themed on design and play – 《日日好玩——玩好設計》.On 20 July 2022, a Sharing Session will be held, in which three guests are invited to share the exploration of making change through play in different aspects. The guests are, Ms. Kathy Wong, Executive Director of Playright Children’s Play Association, Mr. Cyril Lee, founder of Blackbody Lab, and Mr. Edmond Wong, founder of a campus design studio The Third Teacher.

Participants will also have an exclusive experience during the guided tours, in which a complimentary DIY kit set will be provided for each participant to unleash their creativity onsite. Upcycling workshop: Transforming waste to electric bell (Online Workshop)

“Upcycling workshop: Transforming waste to electric bell” will be held by designer, Kevin Cheung, who will lead the participants to transform upcycled materials to an electric bell. The electric bell was first invented by British physicists in the mid 1800s following the invention of electromagnets. When current was passed through the wire, it creates an electromagnetic force which made the bell arm swing sideway and hit the bell, which then broke the current arm fell back. This action repeats, which causes vibration of the arm. All upcycled materials used at this workshop are collected from Hong Kong, in which the bell is made of inner pot of rice cooker and the wooden board came from wine boxes.

Future for Now - Conversation on Speculative Design

Have you watched Black Mirror? Do you think some of the scenarios could actually happen? Or have you given some thoughts on what will our future be like? If there are possibilities that are not so desirable, can we do something now to prevent them from happening? Or what can we do to make our future better?

WARE, a multimedia design studio based in Hong Kong, imagined a future scenario where clean air is a luxury, and they have to be produced and preserved in Airbank. Sam from WARE and Michael will have a conversation about how design could help us dream of a future and why is it important to do so.

    "Brand New Youth" Special Tour

“Youth” usually associates with being young physically, but it becomes more popular to associate with people with a young heart. Our interpretation of being young does not mean age only, but a young state of mind. With a younger mindset, everyone can have a youthful life.

“Brand New Youth”, as the exhibition of Hong Kong Design Spectrum, designs a space to freeze the time of youth. The exhibition reveals collections of good and everlasting designs that never fade.

This is an intergenerational exhibition that we welcome kids and adults to experience the “Future Us”, to step into the shoes of our seniors and understand them physically and mentally. You may explore the classic and heartfelt designs, passing on stories of the grey-haired, and appreciate the thoughtful designs for the elderly nowadays. The exhibition allows you, from across generations, to exchange the power of youth and wisdom from good designs.

【Brand New Youth - Design Workshop】'This is not a stool’ making workshop

The classic round folding stool has never been a single function and is full of plasticity. It is a tribute to it when we take it as an inspiration root to start developing something else .

In the event, through sharing some basic woodworking skills and methods by instructor Ng Ka Chun from Mudwork, participants would be able to transform the folding stool into a ‘small musical instrument’ with personal characteristics, making it not only for sitting but also producing music and fun.

Remarks: All works made by participants will be owned by Design Spectrum and Design Spectrum will select two or three pieces of works for display during the exhibition period.

Children’s imaginations about play are far more than the ordinary adults, because they have not been restricted by social conventions. Children are willing to have unconstrained imaginations and dare to explore and practice.

In the workshop series as initiated by team of Making on Loft between late Feb and early March, a group of P.5 students will lead the participants step into the game world created by them. The students have used various materials and toolkit to design and create different games in the previous “Creative Play Logbook” online activities, and they used pictures and text for records. Let’s experience a game that doesn’t focus on logic, but cares about simple happiness!

The Forbidden Fruit playshop invites participants to confront the challenges Adam and Eve once faced just being… inquisitive. Focusing on our addiction to infotainment, Deep Food’s altered cutlery kits and artificial fruit banquet playset Forbidden Fruit seduces users to engage in a ritual to differentiate our appetite for knowledge from our lust for entertainment. Players assemble the play kit’s clips, joints, and cutlery into utensils to consume a reconstituted ‘Forbidden Fruit’ hanging from a stand as if it were from a tree. Players harness construction and imagination play in their challenge consuming the fruit, thus actualising the consequences Adam and Eve faced in their transgression of a taboo.

【Play Lives - Design Workshop】A Whimsical Adventure Begins – Stones, branches & leaves

This workshop has been POSTPONED to 06.02.2021 (Sat) 2:00pm – 5:00pm. Should you have any enquiries, please feel free to contact us at 3793 8479 or via email to info@designspectrum.hk

Set within a playful and whimsical scenario inspired by nature, the Stones, Branches & Leaves workshop promotes visual poetry through creative exploration of the environment. It offers participants an alternative lens to inquire into the natural world and reveal the value of overlooked resources. Participants will manipulate a quirky selection of natural objects and imbue them with distinct personalities; reflecting our humanity as we interact with the natural landscape. Through an engaging process of discussion, imagination, material experimentation and story-making, the workshop encourages participants to develop personal storylines, intriguing images, and poetic visual narratives in the form of hands-on crafts, drawings, stencils, and short essays weaving speculation into reality. The workshop thus aims to stimulate informal conversations about pro-environmental consciousness and humans’ place on our planet.

【Play Lives - Design Workshop】Flipping the Town, Upside Down

Flipping the town, upside down, participants will be encouraged to discuss innovative recreation activities in HK, explore Wan Chai, document their urban trip, and identify in the district opportunity for city play. They will be invited to propose quirky journeys of urban discovery and design sustainable gameplay systems privileging local production and consumption. Participants will draw from a design approach harnessing cultural, player, environment, business, and experience factors to inform their creative and communication processes. Mapping intergenerational leisure contexts, they will define recreation in terms of socially engaging activities. They will consider local makers’ production systems for the manufacturing of tools for play and leverage mobile media’s playfulness while staying away from propositions that quantify performance, to promote play – for culture’s sake.

*The best two to three pieces of work made by the participants will be selected for display during the design exhibition themed “PLAY LIVES” from February to April 2021.
