A fitting building for an exposition to showcase sustainable bamboo and rattan

Bamboo, a sustainable and reliable material that satisfies a wide array of human needs, has caught industry interest worldwide. To promote its use, the International Bamboo and Rattan Organisation (INBAR) brings together people from different industries and disciplines to discuss and showcase the development of bamboo. The 1,600 square-metres, purpose-built Bamboo Garden Pavilion, the largest of its kind ever built in northern China, will be built for the occasion of 2019 International Horticultural Exhibition to be held in Beijing. Constructed entirely with 5,000 round-pole Moso bamboo poles, the Pavilion will support the weight of a rooftop garden. Each bamboo arch is designed to span between 32 to 40 metres, and inside the cavernous interior, there will be an auditorium and exhibition area, which will house events promoting the use of bamboo in construction and environment conservation. Mauricio Cárdenas Laverde of Italy’s Studio Cardenas Conscious Design, who designed the Energy Efficient Bamboo House in China’s Zhejiang Province, is the project’s architect.
