DESIGNING FUTURE BEHAVIOURS
T • PARK, built by the Environmental Protection Department, is a sludge treatment plant and environmental education centre in Tuen Mun, Hong Kong. Its scientific design transforms knowledge into beneficial application, waste into energy, and perception into behaviour. T • PARK is more than a plant: it is a place to learn, relax, and enjoy recreational and educational public facilities in an innovative and sustainable way.

As impressive as the science, technology and engineering behind the design and operation of the facility are, members of the public only see a meticulously landscaped park, pond, and bird sanctuary which allow the native water birds to thrive. 70% of the land is garden, a welcome respite for inhabitants of nearby Tuen Man, where there are over 500,000 residents.

While the waste-to-energy facility was built with long-term vision, its educational facilities and spaces are for visitors, who can learn about the story, design and processes of transforming waste to energy in the T • GALLERY and T • HALL, where there is an experiential tour of the facility with interactive displays, models, and a curated exhibition. The innovation and sustainability values that the centre promotes are evident in the T • CAFÉ, and the fender wood from Wan Chai Pier when it was demolished, now recycled as furniture, giving it a second life, and preserving a piece of history.

The goal of the T • PARK team is to transform differences made by individuals into positive change adopted by all of us – from ME to WE. Through power generation and self-sufficiency, knowledge and know-how in practicing and promoting sustainability, creative engagement with the public, and bold investment in Hong Kong’s green energy future, the T • PARK elevates design in order to foster behavioural changes on a grand scale.
