A Study on Hong Kong Beiwei Calligraphy & Type Design – Design Spectrum

Coming from different design backgrounds, the Zansyu Beiwei Type Design team consists of type designers and calligraphers who boast experience both in Hong Kong and abroad. The study stems from Zansyu Beiwei Calligraphy, a 2018 publication that traces the type’s origins to the Northern Wei Period over a thousand years ago. Beiwei calligraphy’s influence can still be seen in Hong Kong, Macau, Southeast Asia, and Chinatowns overseas today. As this beautiful and distinct type may gradually disappear from our lives and collective memory, the team enlists information technology and modern typography to keep the Beiwei type alive and relevant in the digital age.
