Grand Gallop──Art and Culture of the Horse is a limited edition catalog of one of the spotlighted exhibitions celebrating the grand opening of the Hong Kong Palace Museum. The design is inspired by the protagonist of the book – Horse. The book structure is derived from the silhouette of the Chinese character ‘馬’, with the thesis part on top and image plates at the bottom, creating a distinctive structure. Words and treasured images are choreographed across Xuanzhi and fancy paper, with entirely hand-bound and deckled edge features, it underlines the beauty found in traditional bookbinding techniques. A meticulous and rigorous grid system is applied to the layout design, allowing a decisive arrangement of images and text – The position of the thesis reference images is solely dependent on the occurrence of image call-out, fabricating a free-flowing rhythm that resonates with the aesthetic in Chinese calligraphy.
