CULTURAL TRADITIONS AND SENSIBILITIES
Bamboo is a fast-growing plant that can thrive even in marginal land. To the Chinese, bamboo is always associated with nobler human qualities such as resilience, honesty and humility. To showcase the widespread use of bamboo in local vernacular, the architectural design represented two starkly different approaches: lightness vs. solidity; temporary vs. permanent; ephemeral vs. eternal. With the same enclosure and structural support, the gossamer translucency is a result of the lattice-like, rhythmic placement of the linear bamboo members. To represent the collaborations between artists and creative industries, and culture and arts are the spiritual and educational necessity for a healthy community, the Bamboo Pavilion was erected on the pond outside the House of World Cultures in Berlin during the Festival of Vision: Hong Kong – Berlin in 2000.
