Hong Kong Beiwei Zansyu is an ongoing cultural research and type design project initiated by Hong Kong designer Adonian Chan. ‘Hong Kong Beiwei’ refers to one of the most popular and significant calligraphy styles in Hong Kong, with numerous applications on the street and daily life, like shop signs, dating back to the 1950s. Its history can even be traced to Southern and Northern dynasty (420–589). Yet it was largely neglected until its resurgence in Qing dynasty (1644–1912). It was then propagated to Hong Kong and subsequently mutated and reinterpreted by local calligraphers.
