Produced by Cardin Chan, this documentary touches on a wide range of subjects, including the reasons for saving neon signs, particularly those Tsui Wah ones. The complexity of the unprecedented sign removal method, especially during the pandemic is also covered, interspersed by thoughts and sentiments of participants and onlookers.
As part of our multi-media archive, it does not only document the visually impressive sign removal itself but serves as a storytelling medium to spread the multi-faceted messages by Cardin. ‘We aim at provoking thoughts, parking conversations, connecting people and ultimately shifting perspectives on Hong Kong neon signs by this conservation initiative of ours – They are not simply a signboard or advertisement but also a piece of art, embodying historical, cultural, social, and visual significance. When decommissioned, they are not junk but should be cherished and respected.’
