The project involves transforming a typical Hong Kong 60s housing unit, known as a ‘Tong Lau’, into a vertical art gallery. The original domestic character is preserved, bringing a ‘human scale’ to the exhibition space that balances the essence of a home with the expression and requirements of a gallery. The existing layout guided the new program: the ground floor shop became the main public gallery, while the first floor incorporated indoor and outdoor areas, including a kitchen and garden. The upper floors were transformed into two exhibition ‘cubes’ by removing slabs: one on the second floor designed as a white cube, and another on the fourth floor reflecting the project’s raw aesthetic. Storage and technical rooms were placed on the fifth floor and roof. The interventions respect the existing context, blending harmoniously with the surroundings.
