The accumulated pattern archive of centuries-old silk weaves and embroideries that have been published by scholars to serve as a treasure trove for designers is open to all for interpretation at HKDI. Through the Cultural Studies sessions, students learned Chinese history that provided the background from which gave birth to these unique textiles. The Textile Design Studios equipped them with the tools to reinterpret through application of embroidery, Shibori, heat transfer printing, silk screen printing and foil printing. As showcased in this exhibit, the ease in the access to new technology has allowed young designers the expansion of applications to beyond fashion textiles, accessories, home furnishings to virtually any ideas that may call for the need of a pattern via the rearrangement of motifs, assignment of new colour palates, and the adding-on of other 21st-century elements.
