Exhibitor’s Stories
Alvin Chair is an experiment on how a two-dimensional planar pattern can be expressed as a three-dimensional object using ‘Cymatics’, which is a concept that visualises sound. This work visualises the sonic vibration, which coalesces into a pattern according to the movement and amplitude of water. He controls vibration intensity with frequency modulation and commences visualising the variations with plaster. Pigments of different colours are thrown into the mix in order to create a three-dimensional colour pattern, and the surface of the plaster reveals different traces each time it gets carved away. As the combination of metallic material and the fluorescent colour pigments suggests the shape, designer attempts to physically manifest the concept of cymatics actively conserves the invisible.
