If you look closely at the tiger’s forehead, there is the character of Tiger 虎 (fu2) hidden within its stripes.
In Cantonese, the word Tiger 虎 is a homophone of 苦, meaning bitterness or hardship. It is not the typical theme you would think of when coming up with auspicious sayings. However, there are several idioms in Chinese that link hardship to the promise of happiness or success. The Chinese name of this piece, 虎中虎、人上人, references a longer phrase: those who endure the hardest of hardships, may rise as a cut above the rest.
